Cross Country Ski


Cross Country skiing is great exercise AND a nice way to get outside and see the beauty of nature. For those who have never cross-country skied, learning is blissfully easy, especially is the terrain is flat. OF course, be cautious, especially if the person has balance problems or sore joints from arthritis (if so, you might want to skip this activity). Many state parks rent skis and poles and have ample trails to explore. No one should ever go skiing alone, but that goes double for the person with memory loss (or two people with memory loss going together). Be sure to pack snacks and hot chocolate, and stick near the rental site until you know the endurance of all parties so you don’t get stuck with a long journey back to your car!

Otherwise, have fun! Cross country skiing is great because the terrain and the views give you instant conversation starters. This makes it an ideal activity for a visiting friend or relative who wants to do something with the person with memory loss, but is afraid they won’t know what to say.

For those with poor balance, in the later stages of the disease, or who just aren’t that athletic, enjoying winter sports doesn’t have to be completely off-limits. Why not visit the local ski chalet, buy some hot cocoa, and settle in by the fire and watch the skiers come and go, or better yet, watch them come down the mountain! I went skiing for the first time in a very, very long time this weekend, and let me tell you, the people watching from the warm cabin was the best part of the day!

    • I tried checking the pictures by not logging in as the blog administrator, and they loaded okay. However, I promise you’re not missing too much by not seeing the pictures!
